A commercial ship with humanitarian aid from Mexico and Uruguay arrived at the port of Havana this Monday. The Asian Katra carried around 1,700 tonnes of food and toiletries. Products include rice, beans and powdered milk. According to local authorities, these will be distributed among vulnerable sectors of the Cuban population.
Cargo details
The Minister of the Food Industry, Alberto López Díaz, thanked Mexico and its president Claudia Sheinbaum, as well as solidarity organizations in Uruguay. He highlighted that the shipment occurs in a context of severe economic and energy difficulties on the island.
The Mexican ambassador to Cuba, Miguel Ignacio Díaz Reynoso, reported that this is the eighth shipment of humanitarian aid from Mexican territory. Unlike previous operations carried out with military vessels, this time the transfer used a Panamanian-flagged merchant ship.
Cuba faces a prolonged crisis with fuel shortages, blackouts and transportation impacts. The authorities attribute this situation to the tightening of the US embargo, while the population resents the direct impact on daily life, especially on the supply of food and basic services.
The arrival of the Asian Katra represents temporary relief for many Cubans who face daily difficulties due to the complex economic outlook.
