A disturbing silence at sea
The Mexican Navy activated an urgent search plan this Thursday. Two sailboats, with nine people on board, showed no signs of life after setting sail on March 20 from Isla Mujeres.
His destination was Cuba. Their mission, to bring humanitarian aid in the midst of the crisis that the island is going through. So far, no communication or confirmation of his arrival.
“The Secretary of the Navy said in a statement that it activated a search plan to locate the two vessels,” the authorities said.
A solidarity flotilla in trouble
The sailboats are part of the Convoy Nuestra América movement. This same convoy already managed to deliver a first ship to Havana on March 24, loaded with food, medicine and solar panels.
The disappearance occurs weeks after the Mexican government itself sent two Navy ships with supplies to Cuba. The context is clear: the tightening of the trade fence affects the Cuban population.
The search is now international. Mexico coordinated actions with maritime rescue centers in Poland, France, Cuba and the United States. Also with the diplomatic representations of the countries of the missing crew members.
At sea, Persuader-type ships and aircraft track the estimated route between Isla Mujeres and Havana. They consider possible course changes and the treacherous Caribbean weather conditions.
The silence of these sailboats resonates like a warning. Nine lives and a load of solidarity lost in the blue immensity, while an island waits.
