14 thousand Mexicans detained in US immigration centers
Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco reported that around 14,000 Mexicans remain detained in ICE and CBP centers in the United States. The figure remains stable compared to previous reports, he noted during the morning conference at the National Palace.
Regarding the deaths of Mexicans in immigration custody, Velasco indicated that the Mexican government continues to insist before Washington to clarify the facts. The Foreign Ministry presented formal briefs to the State Department, but has not received an official update on the investigations. He highlighted the case of the Adelanto detention center, California, where the highest number of deaths of migrants in custody was recorded.
Mexico rejected the existence of a safe third country agreement with the United States. Velasco clarified that there is no formal agreement to receive deportations from third countries. The reception of migrants of other nationalities responds solely to humanitarian criteria, in coordination with the National Migration Institute.
President Claudia Sheinbaum maintained that Mexico acts for humanitarian reasons.
“We are a humanitarian country. If people of other nationalities arrive, they are not rejected. They arrive in Mexico, they are assisted and we see if they want to return to their country of origin or if they want to stay in Mexico under what conditions they can stay.”
