FIFA plans yellow card amnesty for the 2026 World Cup

FIFA proposes erasing yellow cards twice to avoid suspensions in key matches.

Good news for players!

FIFA is ready to give footballers a break at the 2026 World Cup. According to sources close to the AP, the governing body will propose a double yellow card amnesty. The goal? That fewer stars miss decisive matches due to accumulation of warnings.

How does the change work?

Until now, two yellow cards in different games meant a suspension game. But with the new format of 48 teams and an extra round of 32, FIFA adjusts the rules. The proposal: delete the history after the group stage, so that everyone starts the tie with a clean slate. Then, another cleaning after the quarterfinals, so no one is left out of a semifinal or final due to a yellow card at the least expected moment.

“It’s like starting over at each key stage,” FIFA explains.

A change with a head

This is not just paperwork. It’s thinking about the show. For a player to miss a final for accumulating yellow cards in previous matches would be a low blow for the sport. The measure seeks to keep the best on the court when it matters most.

The World Cup starts on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. And with this rule, excitement is guaranteed until the last minute. Because in the end, football is lived on the field, not on the bench for one extra card.

Congolese fan becomes living statue at World Cup

Tribute to Lumumba: Congolese fan remained motionless during the match.

The human statue that captured everyone’s attention

The vibrant meeting between Colombia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the Guadalajara stadium had an unexpected protagonist. While thousands of Colombian fans chanted and danced, one Congolese supporter remained completely motionless for the entire 90 minutes.

Michel Kuka Mboladinga, known as “Lumumba Vea”, stood on a platform that leads to all the stadiums. Dressed in a red suit, yellow shirt and blue pants, he only broke his stance at halftime. The gesture represents a deep tribute to Patrice Lumumba, Congolese independence leader killed in 1961.

His presence generated a sensation among those attending. Dozens of local and foreign fans came to take photos with him. A unique way to keep historical memory alive while experiencing the passion of the World Cup.

Mexico returns to the CDMX Stadium with a ticket to the round of 16

Mexico seeks to close the group stage undefeated against the Czech Republic at home.

Last exam at home

The Mexican National Team returns to the Mexico City Stadium. Already qualified for the next round of the 2026 World Cup, the Tricolor faces the Czech Republic tonight with the aim of remaining undefeated.

Finishing with three victories is not an obsession for Javier Aguirre. Yes, it is closing well in front of your people.

“It is in our home, in our Mexico, with the favor of the people, the energy it gives us, it is important, to close the group stage well, we are not going to give anything away,” declared the coach in a conference.

Mexico leads Group A and will not leave the capital until a hypothetical Quarterfinal duel.

Rotations and doubts

Aguirre will make considerable changes. The only one ruled out is Brian Gutiérrez, to take care of his yellow card. The great unknown: whether Guillermo Ochoa will play in front of his audience.

The match does not define anything on the table, but it fuels the illusion.

“It was very important, it was a primary objective, to be first… to continue one more game at home and continue here would be fantastic,” added the strategist.
