New diplomatic appointment
The Government of Mexico proposed Esteban Moctezuma Barragán as ambassador to Belgium and to the European Union, with concurrent representation in Luxembourg. President Claudia Sheinbaum sent the appointment this Monday to the Permanent Commission of Congress for ratification.
The president of the Board of Directors, Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez, reported that she received the letter from the Ministry of the Interior. The document must be analyzed and approved by the Legislature before Moctezuma takes office.
This Wednesday, July 1, the First Committee on Politics and Work will receive the diplomat in appearance to present his work plan. The opinion will be put to a vote of the plenary session. With a simple majority, he will take his oath as a diplomatic representative.
Among its main tasks is coordinating the strategy for the ratification of the Modernized Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union. It should also strengthen commercial exchange, attract investments and expand cooperation with the bloc’s countries.
Esteban Moctezuma was Mexico’s ambassador to the United States from February 2021 to June 2026. Previously, he was Secretary of Public Education during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He will now head the diplomatic representation in Belgium and the EU, once ratified by Congress.
