Changing of the guard in Washington
President Claudia Sheinbaum dropped the bomb this Thursday: Esteban Moctezuma Barragán leaves the Mexican embassy in the United States after five years. The announcement came in the morning, as one more act of this political work that never rests.
The relief? Roberto Lazzeri Montaño, current director of Nafin and Bancomext, is already in the appointment process. But be careful: the approval of the US government is missing. Sheinbaum assures that Lazzeri has a good relationship with diplomats from the neighboring country. We will see.
Moctezuma does not stay on the street. The president said that she has “the best regard” for him and is looking for another position for him, whether abroad or here. We will know soon.
Who is Esteban Moctezuma?
Politician, economist and diplomat with pedigree: UNAM and Cambridge. But his story has dramatic turns. He was Secretary of Social Development with Zedillo, senator, and Secretary of Public Education with AMLO. Then, after the defeat of the PRI in 2000, he temporarily retired… and went to Grupo Salinas, that archenemy of the 4T. Yes, the same one who presided over Fundación Azteca until 2018.
As ambassador since 2021, he cemented the relationship between López Obrador and Joe Biden, after AMLO took more than a month to congratulate the Democrat on his victory. Moctezuma attended the investiture and smoothed over differences.
The new scenario with Trump
With Donald Trump’s return to the White House in 2025, the outgoing ambassador assured that there are “strategic conversations” with the Republican team. Faced with the magnate’s threats—such as changing the name of the Gulf or mass deportations—Moctezuma declared that there is “sensitivity” with gringo mayors and that Mexico will defend human rights.
“People’s rights will be defended,” said the diplomat.
This change is not minor: it comes just when Trump is tightening the screws on immigration and security. Can Lazzeri keep his balance? The plot continues.
