Temporary taxes to relocate technological production
The Secretary of Commerce of the United States, Howard Lutnick, confirmed that the tariff exemption applied to electronic devices is provisional. In an interview with ABC, he explained that items such as smartphones, computers and chips will be incorporated into a special tax scheme for semiconductors within one or two months.

Lutnick emphasized that the goal is to encourage local manufacturing: “We need to produce these critical components in our country, not depend exclusively on Asia.” The measure temporarily excludes products from retaliatory taxes against China, but they will be part of a specific tax category to incentivize industrial relocation.
Customs and Border Protection published a list of exempt goods on Friday, including modems, routers and USB drives, many of which are no longer produced in the United States. However, this exemption will be replaced by the new tax regime linked to the technology supply chain.
