During a business meeting in Xalapa, the Secretariat of Economic and Port Development (Sedecop) revealed that Indian businessmen are considering establishing a cancer drug laboratory in Emiliano Zapata, a municipality near the state capital.
Ernesto Pérez Astorga, head of Sedecop, explained that work is currently being done to determine the productive vocation of Emiliano Zapata and thus attract investment in the pharmaceutical sector. “We are moving forward to bring laboratories from Indian companies,” the official explained.
The event, which took place within the framework of a traditional gathering for the Three Kings Rosca with members of Coparmex Xalapa, also served to recognize that a large part of national and foreign investment is concentrated in the municipalities of Veracruz and Boca del Río. For this reason, it seeks to decentralize investment to other municipalities that have available infrastructure, as is the case of Emiliano Zapata.
Pérez Astorga also highlighted the importance of the road network, highways and maritime connectivity of Veracruz with the ports of Tuxpan, Veracruz and Coatzacoalcos, as well as rail transport in the southern region. “We must identify the productive vocations that best adapt to each municipality,” he said.
On the other hand, he announced that in 2026, Veracruz will participate in several international agribusiness fairs to promote products such as oranges, lemons, tangerines and vanilla, with the aim of opening new export lines, a strategy defined together with Governor Rocío Nahle.
Sedecop will continue to be in contact with the Indian company to evaluate the location, infrastructure and processes necessary for the installation of the laboratory. If completed, Emiliano Zapata could become a key pharmaceutical hub, complementing the region’s port activity.
