The rebirth of an icon: evolution or usurpation?
It seems that in the world of entertainment, nostalgia is such a profitable business that even dead and buried projects can be resurrected with a new makeup. Jeans, that group that soundtracked the adolescence of millions in the 90s, returns with the help of Paty Sirvent, who evidently decided that if something works well, why not squeeze every last drop out of it? The singer, in a move that few saw coming (or that many were skeptical of), has flooded her social media with the announcement that the original concept will be brought back to life. But surprise! It won’t be as we remembered it.
What initially generated speculation about which former original members would jump on the revival train, turned out to be something much more… shall we say, innovative. Because who needs original singers when you can recruit fresh, moldable teenagers? Paty, in a plot twist that not even the most creative screenwriter would have dared to propose, has revealed that she will not step on stage. No, her role will be much higher: the manager and spiritual guide of what she has baptized as the New Generation Alpha Jeans. Because nothing says “authenticity” like replacing the original members with a group of young people whose faces we can’t even see yet.
The legal spectrum and the forgotten companions
As Paty presents herself as the savior of the Jeans legacy, one can’t help but wonder: what about those women who for the last decade kept the concept alive under the name JNS? It turns out that Angie Taddei, Melissa López, Regina Murguía and Karla Díaz had been working with the acronym JNS precisely because the original name belonged to Paty’s father, Alejandro Sirvent. A technical annoyance, no doubt, but that did not prevent them from retaining the public’s affection. Until now.
The publication of the official announcement has already accumulated hundreds of negative comments, with followers openly wondering if this is a legitimate tribute or a clever move to trample on those who kept the flame lit when no one else cared. The annoyance focuses especially on the detail that Paty did not notify her former colleagues about this new project, an oversight that was surely completely accidental. Or not?
To add more fuel to the fire of this absurd situation, Bobo Producciones (behind JNS) and the current members have completely distanced themselves from the new project. But Paty has her own version of the facts: according to a statement, the National Copyright Institute (INDAUTOR) would have resolved in July 2021 the nullity of the copyright by Bobo Producciones. According to her story, her former colleagues were notified of this resolution in November of that same year, and since then they have made “improper use” of the acronym. A legal mess as tangled as Jeans’ most complicated choreography.
Meanwhile, in the audition video, we can see Paty accompanied by her father (the original creator) and her husband, the politician César Nava, in what seems more like a public relations operation than a genuine search for talent. Young hopefuls only show their backs to the camera, because in this era of overexposure, maintaining mystery is the new marketing strategy. Their identities will be revealed on October 17, along with the release of their first single “Baila”, a brand new song that does not belong to the original Jeans or JNS repertoire. Because, why sing the hits that people love when you can release fresh material?
This whole media circus raises existential questions about authenticity in the music industry: Can a group revive without its original members? Is this a tribute or an appropriation? And was anyone really asking for a new generation of Jeans? The answers, like perfect choreography, probably require more practice than they seem.
