Free hugs, beer at 60 and rainbow capitalism
Ah, the Pride March: that beautiful event where love is free, diversity shines and… informal commerce blooms like a daisy in spring. Because, what would a social demonstration be without the opportunity to buy a rainbow-colored pin or a “diversity chick” (yes, that exists) for only 10 pesos?
Amid the sea of flags and painted bodies, one cannot help but notice that the true unsung hero of the march is the street vendor. “If you want, I’ll give you a hug, it’s free,” says a woman, while her neighbor offers pink vodka for 50 pesos. Because nothing says “love is love” like a cheap drink and an economical transaction.
Entrepreneurship does not rest, not even in social struggle
Vanessa, the genius behind Gadi Shop, reminds us that the entrepreneurial spirit does not understand social causes. “It takes me a whole day to make a bag,” she confesses, while offering a 20% discount on her tote bags because, apparently, even activism has a sales season. Your products? Made with “a lot of love and dedication”, as if emotional capitalism were the true protagonist of the event.
And we can’t forget the grandpa who decided that homemade sushi was the perfect contribution to the LGBTTTIQ+ fight. “It’s the first year I’ve gone out to sell,” he says, while packing his noodles for 150 pesos. Because, clearly, the revolution begins in the stomach… and ends in the wallet.
Between beers at 60 pesos, flags at 100 and free “wellness water” (with thermos included, because health comes first), one wonders: are we celebrating diversity or simply turning the fight into a street bazaar? Of course, no one can deny that the creativity to monetize the event is worthy of an MBA.
So the next time someone tells you about the Pride March, remember: not only is it a cry for equality, it’s also the most colorful trade show of the year. And if you don’t like it, you can always console yourself with a mojito for 75 pesos.
