Justice comes at a snail’s pace (if it comes at all)
Ah, yes, the trial for the murder of journalist Heber Fernando López Vásquez – victim of the brilliant Mexican strategy of “shoot first and ask never” – resumes this Monday. Three years after the crime, because why rush? The communicator’s family, who continues to wait for the judicial system to remember how it works, demands a fair process and an exemplary punishment. In other words, the basics in any country that does not pretend to be a rule of law.
The crime that no one forgot (except the authorities)
Heber, director of Noticias Web, was executed in his own office in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, in 2022. Because nothing says “freedom of expression” like a bullet in the body. His wife and children are now experts in forced displacement, while his parents try not to collapse in the absence of their son. But don’t worry, there are two detainees. Responsible? Who knows. The system prefers suspense.
“The truth cannot be killed by killing journalists,” the family cries. Nice phrase, although Mexico seems determined to prove the opposite. With more than 150 journalists murdered since 2000, the country is a press man (and woman) swallowing machine. The protection mechanism for journalists? Ah yes, the one that works as well as an umbrella in a hurricane.
The family and the journalistic union ask for urgent security measures. Because, of course, three years of threats are not enough for the State to react. Priorities? Justice takes time, but political speeches are very punctual.
