The scandal that smells of oil… and corruption
It seems that the US Department of Justice got its act together and decided to give a dramatic touch to the soap opera of corruption in Pemex. This Monday, he accused two Mexicans – Ramón Alexandro Rovirosa Martínez and Mario Alberto Ávila Lizarraga – of handing out bribes as if they were candy on the Day of the Dead. The goal? Manipulate tenders and secure million-dollar contracts with the parastatal. Because, of course, what would Mexico be without a good corruption scandal every six months?
The juicy (and very expensive) details
According to the statement, these two entrepreneurs (read sarcastically) did not mess around: they offered everything from Louis Vuitton bags to Hublot watches, because nothing says “accept this bribe” like a luxury accessory. Between 2019 and 2021, they allegedly distributed around $150,000 in cash and expensive gifts to at least three Pemex and PEP officials. Result? Contracts for 2.5 million dollars. Come on, an investment with a guaranteed return… until the FBI stuck its nose in.
But the drama doesn’t end here. It turns out that Rovirosa – the brain behind this Ocean’s Eleven-style operation but without the charisma of George Clooney– has links with Mexican cartels. Because, obviously, if you’re going to cheat, do it big. Meanwhile, Ávila is on the run, probably watching Narcos somewhere with free WiFi and wondering where the plan went wrong.
The consequences: prison or just a scare?
If found guilty, each could face up to five years in prison per charge. In other words, enough time to reflect on your decisions… or to write a book titled “How Not to Bribe Officials: Lessons Learned”. Of course, with Mexican and American justice involved, this case promises more twists than an episode of La Casa de Papel.
Meanwhile, the FBI and HSI continue investigating, because this smells like there are more collaborators behind it. And you, what do you think? Do you think this is just the tip of the iceberg or are we already up to our necks in corruption?
