Frustrated return

Conor McGregor confirmed that he suffered a torn right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus damage during his UFC 329 fight against Max Holloway. The fight, held on July 11, lasted just 1:09.

The Irishman compared this injury to the one he suffered in the opposite leg against Holloway in 2013.

“Update: it was ACL and meniscus. It’s the same injury as in the first fight with Holloway, only this time on the opposite leg. Pretty shocking,” McGregor wrote in X.

His return to the Octagon after a five-year absence ended abruptly when he fell awkwardly while attempting a kick in the opening seconds. The 38-year-old tried to continue, but the fight was stopped after falling to the canvas two more times.

McGregor underwent surgery last week and is now walking without crutches. He hopes to return to the octagon in 2027.

“Back then I returned to compete in 9 months to fight Diego Brandao. With current advances in regenerative medicine and improved training methods, it is totally within my possibilities to return for next summer,” he added.

New Zealander Ryan Fox won his first major title by winning the British Open at Royal Birkdale. At 39 years old, the son of a former All Blacks rugby player, he holed a 12-foot birdie on the final hole for a round of 68 strokes, two under par.

Fox finished with a 10-under 270. He is the oldest debuting champion since Henrik Stenson ten years ago.

“I’m not entirely sure how I made that putt on 18. It’s a dream come true,” Fox declared upon receiving the jug of claret.

Si Woo Kim led early on the back nine, but made bogeys at 11 and 12, and a 40 in that half for a 72. Fox, two strokes behind Young after missing a putt at 11, responded with birdies at 13 and 14 to tie. A bogey on 15 complicated it, but his birdie on 16 and the final putt defined the story.

The 15-year-old twins from Guadalajara, Mia and Lia Cueva, took the gold medal in the three-meter springboard during the Mexico Diving Cup in Guadalajara.
