The price of being ‘Don Eugenio’: Derbez celebrates his granddaughter’s 8th birthday
Eugenio Derbez officially entered the grandparents club in 2018, when Kailani was born, daughter of Aislinn Derbez and Mauricio Ochmann. Eight years later, the actor celebrates that role with a perfect mix of affection and acid humor.
For her granddaughter’s birthday, Derbez shared a message that sums up the millennial experience of getting older without wanting to admit it. The transition from ‘bro’ to ‘Don’ hasn’t been easy, but it seems worth it.
“Today, my granddaughter Kai’s birthday is. Since I became a grandfather, everyone talks louder to me, offers me their seat, recommends vitamins and my friends stopped calling me ‘bro’ and now call me ‘Don’.”
The actor has four children – Aislinn, Vadhir, José Eduardo and Aitana – and two granddaughters: Kailani and Tessa. But it was with the birth of Kai that he felt the generational change firsthand.
The best thing is that Derbez laughs about it. He even joked about receiving the INAPAM (formerly INSEN) credential as part of the grandpa package.
“But if this is the price I have to pay for being Kai’s grandfather… let them ask me for my credentials! Happy birthday, my girl!”.
She accompanied the message with retro photos from when Kailani was younger – that family archive that we all have but only grandparents publish without a filter. Tenderness won over ego.
In an industry obsessed with eternal youth, seeing a star embrace his grandfatherly role with this wry self-awareness is refreshing. Derbez found the perfect balance: all the love, half the drama.
