Not even his stay in the United States protected him from the law. A man accused of breaching family obligations was detained by the Ministerial Criminal Investigation Agency (AMIC) as soon as he was deported to Mexico.
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Sonora (FGJE) reported that Leonel “N”, 33 years old and originally from Agua Prieta, was arrested for his probable responsibility in the crime of breach of family obligations against a minor whose identity remains reserved.
Immediate detention after deportation
The capture occurred when United States authorities deported him and handed him over to the Mexican federal authorities at the Dennis DeConcini checkpoint in Nogales. Then, personnel from the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) made him available to the AMIC, which carried out an arrest warrant in force since March 27, 2025.
According to the FGJE investigations, the accused allegedly omitted his legal obligations of assistance and support towards the victim, which motivated the request and obtaining of that court order.
Background and legal situation
The authorities indicated that Leonel “N” has previous records for family violence in 2021 and 2022, in addition to another investigation for the same crime of family non-compliance that began in 2023. Already detained, he was admitted to the Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) of Agua Prieta, at the disposal of a judge who will define his legal situation.
The Sonora Prosecutor’s Office reiterated that it will continue to promote legal actions to protect children and adolescents, and to ensure that family responsibilities are met. He stressed that no one can evade justice, not even by trying to stay outside the country.
