The actor does not bite his tongue
Robert De Niro returned to the fray. In a recent appearance on the The Best People podcast, the legendary actor spilled everything he thinks about Donald Trump. And believe me, they were not fulfilled.
“Everything this country has fought for, everything it represents, he is destroying. We don’t know what his motives are, but it’s sick,”
he declared bluntly. For De Niro, mass deportation policies and cuts to culture are just the tip of the iceberg of a larger problem.
The word everyone was waiting for
But things didn’t stop there. The protagonist of Taxi Driver went further in his criticism, using a term that summarizes his opinion:
“He’s an idiot. We have to get rid of him. This is our country,”
He expressed it with that intensity that only he knows how to project, even off screen.
For the Oscar winner, the MAGA movement and its uniquely patriotic aesthetic represent just the opposite of what America should be: unity instead of division.
This is not new, of course. De Niro has been one of Trump’s most vocal detractors in Hollywood for years. Let us remember his public protest in Cannes last year. But this time, in podcast format and with more direct language than ever, its message seems more urgent.
Will it be the beginning of a new wave of celebrity activism before the elections? Time will tell. But for now, De Niro continues to prove that some actors prefer to take off their masks when it comes to politics.
