Because De Niro was missing one more ornament on his mantelpiece
The legendary (and almost professional awards collector) Robert De Niro is about to receive another piece of shiny metal for his shelf: the honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Yes, the same one who already has two Oscars, a Golden Globe and probably a drawer full of statuettes that he doesn’t even remember. But who’s counting?
The festival, in an act of overwhelming originality, decided to pay tribute to the man who has done everything from playing gangsters to… well, basically gangsters, but with different costumes. The ceremony will be on May 13, because what better way to celebrate cinema than by giving awards to people who already have too many.
“Cannes is like coming home,” says the actor (who clearly has many homes)
In a statement that was probably written by his assistant (or ChatGPT), De Niro declared: “I feel a deep connection with Cannes.” Of course, because nothing unites humanity more than a bunch of celebrities in very expensive suits drinking champagne. Also, as a bonus, he will give a master class… because if there is something the world needs, it is for a guy who played Taxi Driver to explain to us how to act. Registration open?
In case anyone doubted it, this is not the first time that De Niro has walked through Cannes. In 2011 he was president of the jury (spoiler: he probably chose films with gangsters) and in 2023 he went to promote his latest collaboration with Scorsese. Because, what would cinema be without these two reinventing the gangster genre for the twentieth time?
Thus, the actor joins the exclusive club of Jodie Foster, Tom Cruise and Woody Allen, who also have their own Palmes d’Or. Because in Hollywood, if you don’t have an honorary award, do you really exist?
