President Claudia Sheinbaum released this Thursday a figure that sounds like hope for many: one trillion pesos, yes, with a ‘b’, channeled to Pensions and Welfare Programs in 2025. The source? The strategy to combat corruption.
The magic formula
According to Sheinbaum, the key is austerity. I quote verbatim: “Our movement came to power with a very clear slogan: end the regime of corruption and privileges. If we had not ended the corruption of the past, we would not have the Welfare Programs.”
And not only that: he ensures that administrative honesty bore fiscal fruit. Collection reached 5.3 billion pesos in 2025, without touching taxes. Even intentional homicides fell 45% between 2024 and the first quarter of 2026, according to official data.
The fine print of deposits
Leticia Ramírez, Secretary of Welfare, explained that the next disbursement – May-June two-month period – starts on May 4 and closes on the 27th. It will benefit 32 million people with more than 104 billion pesos. The deposits arrive staggered, in alphabetical order of the first last name.
Do you think it’s enough?
Sheinbaum concluded with a resounding “Never”: “There was a fundamental transformation and we are not going to betray that transformation.” But, as always, the doubt remains in the air: has the corruption gone or just hidden better? The history of this country has taught us to distrust pretty numbers.
