The director’s regret
Chris Columbus, recognized for directing the family classic “Home Alone”, publicly expressed his remorse for including the brief appearance of Donald Trump in the 1992 sequel. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, the filmmaker admitted that he would like to eliminate that scene, which has generated controversy for decades.
A decision that haunts
“It has become a curse, a burden for me. I wish it had never existed,” Columbus confessed. “But eliminating it now would have unforeseeable consequences, including personal ones.” The participation of the then businessman, of just seven seconds, shows Trump as the owner of the Plaza Hotel in New York, where Kevin McCallister’s character (Macaulay Culkin) asks him for directions.
Although the inclusion seemed innocent at the time, Trump’s rise to the US presidency and his subsequent controversies revived criticism of the scene. Columbus acknowledged that, had he foreseen it, he would have opted for another alternative.
Trump’s demand
The cameo was not the film crew’s original idea. As Columbus revealed to Business Insider in 2020, Trump conditioned permission to film at the Plaza Hotel in exchange for appearing in the film. “We paid for access, but he insisted: ‘Only if I go out’. We accepted so as not to lose the location,” he explained.
Trump’s reaction
In 2023, the former president defended his participation in Truth Social, ensuring that he agreed at the insistence of the producers and calling the cameo “a historic success.” In addition, he accused Columbus of seeking relevance by expressing his regret decades later.
