Mandatory registration for tourists who buy chips in Mexico
Looking ahead to the 2026 Soccer World Cup, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) reported that foreign visitors who purchase a national SIM card must link their line to an official document.
The measure applies only to those who buy a chip from companies such as Telcel, AT&T or Movistar. Those who use international roaming with their home operator are exempt.
Registration is carried out with a valid passport. When purchasing the SIM, the company can offer on-the-spot pairing. If not, the tourist must do it online by following these steps:
- Enter the official portal of your operator.
- Enter the phone number.
- Complete biometric validation.
If the link is not made, the line will be suspended. You will not be able to make calls, send text messages or use mobile data, even for social networks.
Another alternative is to purchase an international eSIM, which does not require registration. In that case, it is recommended to install it a day before arriving in Mexico so that the data plan is activated when you set foot on Mexican soil.
The CRT stressed that the objective is to reinforce telecommunications security during the sporting event. Tourists must anticipate this procedure to avoid setbacks in their communication.
