Horizontes Latinos receives Diego Luna
Diego Luna’s new film, Ceniza en la boca, will be part of the Horizontes Latinos section of the San Sebastián Film Festival, which will be held in September. The film addresses Mexican migration in Spain from a female perspective.
Based on the novel of the same name by Brenda Navarro, the story follows Lucila, a 21-year-old girl who travels from Mexico to Spain with her younger brother to reunite with her mother, who emigrated years ago. In this process, he faces family tensions, uprooting, misogyny and racism, while seeking to build his identity.
The cast is headed by Ana Díaz, known for La Cocina, and Adriana Paz, from Emilia Pérez. The production is carried out by La Corriente del Golfo (by Luna), Animal de Luz (by Inna Payán), Perro Azul and the Spanish company Iniciai Films.
“We have been working for three years to reach this moment. I am very fortunate to be able to collaborate with this team, made up of diverse and enriching voices,” Luna said in a statement.
In addition to this film, other Mexican films will compete in Horizontes Latinos: Moscas, by Fernando Eimbcke, and Chicas tristes, by Fernanda Tovar, winner at the Berlinale. Also presented will be El deshielo, a co-production by Mexican Julio Chavezmontes.
Ash in the mouth already had a special screening at Cannes, where it received good comments. It was filmed for five weeks in Spain and three in Mexico.
Launch in theaters
The film will arrive in Spanish cinemas on October 9. In Mexico, according to Inna Payán, it is expected between the end of the year and the beginning of 2027.
