Driver accelerated when he felt cornered; 17 injured during World Cup celebrations.

Investigation in progress

The Baja California Sur Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation after the accident that occurred Wednesday night in Cabo San Lucas, during the celebrations for Mexico’s victory over the Czech Republic in the 2026 World Cup.

According to the local police, the driver of the vehicle “when he found himself surrounded by people who were obstructing the passage and exerting physical pressure on his unit, carried out an untimely acceleration maneuver, causing several pedestrians to be run over.”

The Los Cabos City Council reported 17 injuries, of which six remain hospitalized. Among them, a 48-year-old American woman, originally from Santa Cruz, California.

The driver was also injured and is in critical condition. Ulises Sandoval, commander of the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department, explained that the man “was taken out of the car and they almost lynched him.”

Videos spread on networks show fans surrounding the car as it tried to move forward. The crowd chanted until the vehicle accelerated, ran over several people and ended up crashing into a bollard.

“It was very chaotic. People were still in the street celebrating and it seemed that they had not noticed the multiple collision,” said Juan Carlos Guevara, a paramedic from a private ambulance that treated the injured.

This is the most serious incident reported in Mexico during the World Cup celebrations, of which the country is co-hosting along with the United States and Canada. Until now, the World Cup had been peaceful, with some minor disturbances.

Earthquakes in Venezuela: SRE reports Mexicans safe and prepares repatriation

SRE confirms that Mexicans in Venezuela are safe; 26 request repatriation.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 shook Venezuela, leaving 920 fatalities and 50,000 people missing so far. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that Mexicans in that country are well.

The agency, headed by Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, did not report any deceased compatriots. In addition, he announced that they are already preparing the repatriation of a group of Mexicans who wish to return.

Diplomatic actions

The Mexican embassy in Caracas has contacted, via telephone and email, 73 people—residents or in transit.

“All of them are in good health and in safe places,” said the SRE.

A group of 26 nationals expressed their willingness to return to Mexican territory. Their transfer will be coordinated with the flights of the Mexican Air Force that yesterday brought humanitarian aid and 250 rescue elements to Venezuela.

“The Foreign Ministry recognizes the work and professionalism of the diplomatic staff of our representation in Venezuela, who are safe and carrying out the required consular assistance and protection tasks,” the agency added.

For emergencies, the Mexican embassy in Caracas makes available the telephone number +58 412 2524675 and the email address [email protected].

UN demands investigation into murder of search engine in Guanajuato

The UN demands investigation and protection after the murder of a search engine in Guanajuato.

The United Nations (UN) demanded an expedited investigation and protection for search mothers. This after the murder of Patricia Negrete Tafoya on June 23, and three other searchers deprived of life in 2026 in Guanajuato.

UN demands

Andrea Bolaños Vargas, UN special rapporteur on human rights defenders, described the murder of Patricia Negrete as worrying. She belonged to the collective “Una Promesa por Complir” and was looking for her sister Laura Angélica, missing since January 5, 2021.

“Patricia is the fourth searcher defender murdered in Guanajuato in 2026. The fifth in Mexico this year,” she published on her social network.

Patricia Negrete was attacked with shots last Sunday night near the Pénjamo Regional Hospital, where she worked as mayor.

The rapporteur expressed solidarity with the searcher groups and recognized their work in a violent context. He urged the Mexican State to investigate with a gender perspective, prioritize violence against women defenders and guarantee effective protection. He also asked to clarify the whereabouts of three missing searchers.

Last goodbye to Paty

Between flowers and applause, family, friends and mothers of the group said goodbye to “Paty” at the Municipal Pantheon. Dozens attended a mass at the Temple of San Miguel Arcángel and then the procession. They remembered her as a sensitive person who fought for more than five years looking for her sister. Human rights defenders expressed solidarity with her family.
