Senegal thrashes Iraq and dreams of the next round
Senegal beat Iraq 5-0 with a double from Pape Gueye. The African team is positioned as one of the best third places in the 2026 World Cup.
The match started in a dizzying manner. In the 4th minute, Habib Diarra connected with a header after a corner kick to open the scoring. Senegalese pressure provoked Iraqi desperation. Rebin Sulaka cut off a clear goal play and received a red card in the 13th minute. Iraq played with ten men the rest of the match.
In the second half, Iraq’s defensive errors were decisive. At 56′, Ismaila Sarr took advantage of a pass in front of the goal to score 2-0. Three minutes later, Pape Gueye fired a left-footed shot from the corner to make it 3-0. Gueye did not forgive and in the 71st minute he scored his double with an unstoppable shot. Already in the 82nd minute, Iliman Ndiaye sealed the win with a long-range shot.
With this victory, Senegal has three points and a favorable goal difference. The team awaits results from other games to classify as one of the best third places. For Iraq, defeat means elimination: they did not get any points in the group stage.
The match was played in Toronto, Canada. The Iraq team, led by Graham Arnold, could not contain the offensive power of the Teranga Lions.
