Beyoncé, the trophy machine, continues collecting awards
Oh, surprise, Beyoncé is back to doing what she does best: winning. But this time it wasn’t a Grammy, or a Billboard, or even an award invented by his adoring fans. No no. The queen of pop has just won her first Emmy, because, of course, why settle for just dominating music when you can also invade television?
The award came for her show Beyoncé Bowl, broadcast on Netflix during an NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans. Because obviously, if there’s one thing football fans need in the middle of a game, it’s a cowboy-themed country-western interlude. Who would have thought? The show, based on her album Cowboy Carter, was watched by 27 million people, proving once again that Beyoncé could sing a restaurant menu and still break ratings records.
A technical award, but a giant step towards EGOT
The Emmy was awarded in the category of “outstanding costume design for variety programming”, which means that, technically, it wasn’t Beyoncé who won it, but her team of designers. But let’s be honest, does anyone think that trophy won’t end up on their shelf next to the other 32 Gramys? The singer shared the honor with designer Shiona Turini and her team, because even goddesses need help to look impeccable in the middle of a denim show.
The funniest thing of all is that this award did not go through the usual voting process. It was decided by a committee, which makes us wonder: Were regular voters too busy paying homage to Taylor Swift? Be that as it may, this Emmy brings Beyoncé closer to an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), the holy grail of entertainment awards. He only needs an Oscar and a Tony. Does anyone doubt that he will get them? Probably before the end of this decade.
Meanwhile, Beyoncé remains in the running for two more Emmys: one as producer of the Beyoncé Bowl and another for directing. The Primetime Emmy ceremony will be on September 14, so get ready to see if the queen continues to expand her trophy collection or if, for once, someone else steals the show (spoiler: we doubt it).
