Angelina Jolie and Doug Liman: The duo that will save (or destroy) the spy film?
Because of course, the world needed another spy movie. But not just any movie, one starring Angelina Jolie and directed by Doug Liman! The same duo that gave usMr. and Mrs. Smith, where Brad and Angelina showed that marriage can be as explosive as an unsafe grenade. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter (that source that is never wrong, except when it is), the actress and director are teaming up for The Initiative, a thriller that Universal describes as “Training Day, but with more fancy suits and less ethics.” Sound familiar? Sure, but who cares when you’ve got Jolie wielding guns and looking deadly?
The plot: Espionage or failed group therapy?
According to rumors (or the press release someone wrote between sips of coffee), Jolie will play Bright, a rebel spy who, surprise, doesn’t follow the rules. Because nothing says “originality” like a character who operates outside the law. When a rookie named Charlie joins her team, Bright must decide if her boss wants to kill her or just has a weird sense of humor. Is it a metaphor for corporate bureaucracy? Or just an excuse for chase scenes in exotic cities? Universal prefers you to guess.
The script is by F. Scott Frazierwhose resume includes movies you probably saw on a plane. But hey, if it manages to capture half of Jolie’s charisma, it’s already a success. Of course, the release date remains a mystery, like the contents of the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. 2024? 2025? Never? Who knows, but in the meantime, we can speculate: Will Jolie wear a waitress costume? Will there be a Brad Pitt cameo as the villain? (Please let it be so.)
The only thing that is certain is that, between shootings and sarcastic dialogues, this film promises to be as subtle as an elephant in a glass store. And honestly, that’s just what we want.
