International tension escalated this Monday due to the possible direct involvement of Belarus in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Belarusian opposition leader in exile Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has arrived in kyiv as the Ukrainian capital is still recovering from the most severe Russian airstrike of the year.
Warnings from kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned in recent days that Belarus could once again function as a military platform for a Russian offensive from the north, as happened at the beginning of the invasion in February 2022. Suspicions intensified after the joint nuclear exercises between Moscow and Minsk last week.
Tsikhanouskaya’s visit seeks to strengthen international solidarity and expose the risks of the Russian-Belarusian alliance. His presence in kyiv occurs at a time of maximum attention on the role of Belarus.
Regional implications
In Europe, governments are assessing the impact of nuclear exercises on regional security. The international community is closely monitoring Belarus’s movements and its possible role in an escalation of the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine is strengthening its defense in the north, prepared for any eventuality.
