Breach of acoustic regulations in establishments in the Historic Center
The Environmental and Territorial Planning Office (PAOT) of Mexico City intervened after receiving a citizen report about the unauthorized removal of closure seals in two establishments located in the Regina area and Mesones alley, belonging to the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office. The seals had been previously placed for exceeding the permitted decibel limits, as established in local regulations.
Regulatory context and alarming figures
According to data published by EL UNIVERSAL, the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office leads noise pollution complaints in 2024, with 417 cases registered. They are followed by Benito Juárez (160) and Miguel Hidalgo (102). The Environmental Noise Protection Regulation sets a maximum of 68 dB(A) during the day (6:00-22:00) and 65 dB(A) at night (22:00-6:00).
The Commercial Establishments Law, reformed in 2023, allows the sale of alcohol until 2:00 a.m. in restaurants and until 3:00 a.m. in private clubs. However, this flexible schedule contrasts with the repeated acoustic violations detected in the area.
