A Saturday that no one will forget in Cajibío
The Pan-American highway, in the southwest of Colombia, became the scene of a tragedy that shakes the country. A bus that was traveling through the El Túnel sector, in the municipality of Cajibío (Cauca), was the target of an explosive device that left a preliminary balance of 20 people dead and 36 injured, according to official reports.
Among the fatalities there are 15 women and five men. Several injured remain in critical condition. The explosion was so powerful that it opened a huge crater in the road and destroyed nearby vehicles. It is, without a doubt, one of the most serious attacks recently recorded in this region.
Who is behind it?
The authorities point to dissidents from the former FARC, specifically the faction known as Jaime Martínez. This group has been blamed for at least 26 recent attacks in the area. It is no coincidence: Cauca is strategic for illicit economies, and violence does not stop escalating.
The governor of Cauca, Octavio Guzmán, declared three days of mourning. Forensic teams work around the clock identifying the bodies. Among the injured there are minors; some are now out of danger, but others are still fighting for their lives.
“It’s a heartbreaking situation,” said a local official on condition of anonymity. “We are doing everything we can to support the affected families.”
Meanwhile, the community is left with difficult questions: until when? How many more lives will have to be lost before something changes?
