A first round that left more doubts than certainties
Atleti and Arsenal met at the Metropolitano and, as expected, they did not take advantage. A 1-1 that tastes little, but leaves the series wide open.
The match had everything: intensity, strong legs, and a referee controversy that had something to talk about. The colchoneros came out to bite from the first minute, but the ‘Gunners’ responded with the calm of someone who knows that the series is long.
“It was a very tactical match, where the two teams respected each other a lot,” commented an analyst at the end of the match.
Griezmann appeared when he was needed most, but Arsenal were not far behind and found the tie in a play that left more than one claim on the field. That’s football: sometimes the scoreboard doesn’t reflect the effort.
The good: the series is still alive. The best: everything will be defined at the Emirates, in an atmosphere that promises to be electric. Next Tuesday, London will be the scene of an early final.
Tonight’s lesson: In sports, as in life, processes matter more than immediate results. Atleti showed character, but Arsenal also has weapons. The key is even, and that’s just what we needed to get excited.
Prepare for the return. This has only just begun.
