The prelude to a great game
The Metropolitano is preparing for a magical night. Atlético de Madrid and Arsenal collide this Wednesday in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals, with a ticket to the final that has not been seen for a decade for the colchoneros and two decades for the ‘Gunners’. But both arrive with significant losses.
Lookman, the great unknown
Ademola Lookman, Atlético’s star signing, is a doubt. The Nigerian has been suffering from muscle discomfort since the Copa del Rey final, where the Colchoneros lost to Real Sociedad. Although he trained with the group, Simeone was clear: “We will see if he recovers well tomorrow, because he still has some discomfort.” Lookman has seven goals with Atleti, one of them key against Barça in the quarterfinals. His speed and imbalance are weapons that Cholo would miss.
“His arrival has had a very good impact on the team, he has differential things offensively,” said Simeone.
The English side: Eze appears, Havertz and Timber out
On the other hand, Arsenal breathes with the possible return of Eberechi Eze, that playmaker who makes a difference. But not everything is good news: Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber are confirmed out due to injury. Arteta, however, does not lose faith: “What an opportunity, and we are going to take advantage of it with both hands.”
The weight of history
Simeone knows what it is to get here. This is Atlético’s fourth semi-final under his command, with two finals lost against Real Madrid. But the Argentine coach does not speak of pressure, but of responsibility: “The illusion of being close to an enormous goal that the club has never achieved.”
The lesson of sport
This is not just tactics. It’s resilience. Lookman, who arrived from Atalanta and previously spent time at Fulham, Leicester or Leipzig, summed it up well: “The work we have shown together has been incredible.” In sports, as in life, injuries are part of the journey. The important thing is how you respond. And both teams are hungry for glory.
