The Mexican Army responds to fire in the heart of Tierra Caliente
It seems that another episode of the series that no one asked for, but that everyone in Michoacán is forced to see, has just been recorded in Cerro Colorado. This Wednesday, elements of the Mexican Army had to change their patrol routine for a real action scene when they were shot at by a criminal group. Spoiler alert: the ending didn’t go very well for the bad guys.
The episode began like any other: the soldiers were crossing a gap that connects Caltzontzin, in Uruapan, with Ziracuaretiro. That is, in the heart of the avocado region, because what could go wrong between avocados and organized crime? Suddenly, the silence was cut by the sound of assault rifles and explosives. The exact place: the community of San Andrés Coru, which for a few hours became the unauthorized filming set of a horror movie.
The federal response and the secured arsenal
Faced with the aggression, the soldiers did not sit idly by. They repelled the attack and in the ballistic struggle, two members of the armed group were killed. Rumors in the area speak of more injured criminals, but in this reality show of insecurity, official data is more elusive than a like from your crush.
As reinforcements in a video game mission, elements of the National Guard and the Ziracuaretiro Municipal Police soon arrived in the area. Because of course, when things get bad, the entire squad is called. Until yesterday afternoon, the three levels of government were maintaining a surveillance operation to try to locate the other people responsible. Basically, an intensive search with more deployment than when you lose your cell phone.
But the plot twist of this story was not only the confrontations. The state Secretary of Public Security announced the seizure of war loot that included firearms and, to make it more interesting, an explosive device. They even had to call the Explosive Devices Specialized Group to take care of a grenade. Because nothing says “security issue” like having to defuse a grenade in the middle of an avocado field.
The authorities promised to strengthen security efforts and increase the operations of the Civil Guard in the region. Or, in other words, the classic “the situation is under control, but we’re going to send more people just in case.”
This event is another reminder of the complex and volatile situation that exists in several regions of Michoacán, where the dispute for territorial control continues to write stories with bullets. And meanwhile, ordinary citizens continue to wait for that chapter in which peace is the main protagonist and not a supporting actor.
