No support from Rome
The SSPX justified its decision by alleging a “state of necessity” to preserve Catholic tradition in the face of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. During the event, its leaders ignored the validity of the canonical sanctions and stated that they were acting in defense of the faith.
The ceremony brought together about 16,500 followers from different countries. The fraternity has hundreds of priests, seminarians and religious communities in several nations, in addition to thousands of faithful who support the traditional Latin mass.
So far, the Vatican has not issued an official statement on these consecrations. Specialists point out that the episode represents one of the greatest challenges for the pontificate of Leo XIV, who has prioritized the strengthening of ecclesiastical unity.
