An inmate escapes from the Oriente Preventive Prison in Mexico City

All security protocols are activated after the disappearance of an inmate accused of attempted murder. Investigations point to possible negligence.

Analysis of Evasion in the Oriente Men’s Preventive Prison

The authorities of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City confirmed an incident of serious compromise to public security: the evasion of an individual deprived of liberty from the Oriente Men’s Preventive Prison. The incident occurred during the night of Tuesday, September 23, revealing possible fissures in the prison’s custody protocols.

The identified inmate is Marvin Didier Barrientos Flores, 27 years old. The leak was officially discovered during the protocol nightly roll call, when the subject did not show up. The Penitentiary Custody staff, assigned to the Undersecretariat of the Penitentiary System of the SSC, carried out the corresponding verification on the morning of Wednesday, September 24, confirming his absence.

Activation of Protocols and Internal Investigation

Immediately, after verifying the evasion, the search and location protocol established for these cases was activated. At the same time, agents from the Internal Affairs Directorate of the SSC went to the prison to begin an exhaustive administrative investigation. The primary objective of this investigation is to determine the exact circumstances that allowed the escape, for which the guards who were on duty during the corresponding shift were carefully interviewed. The integration of an investigation folder seeks to clarify possible negligence or complicity.

As part of the immediate legal and disciplinary actions, the SSC reported that the custodians involved in surveillance, along with the director of the Oriente Men’s Preventive Prison, were formally presented before an agent of the Public Ministry. This measure is intended for the ministerial authorities to follow up on the investigation into the crime of prisoner escape, a fact that not only constitutes a breach of the law by the escaped inmate, but may also imply responsibilities for the personnel in charge.

Criminal History of the Escapee and Location Efforts

The analysis of the escapee’s profile reveals the seriousness of the event. Marvin Didier Barrientos Flores was being held preventively for the crime of attempted homicide. The background of the case indicates that, on February 13, the individual violently attacked two neighbors in the San Bernabé Ocotepec neighborhood, belonging to the Magdalena Contreras mayor’s office. The modus operandi of the attack involved the use of bladed and blunt weapons, specifically a knife and a pipe, which denotes a high level of danger.

In response to this security event, authorities have implemented a search operation. A crucial component of the forensic and reconstructive investigation is the careful analysis of surveillance camera recordings from the prison. The review of this audiovisual material has a double objective: first, track the movements of Barrientos Flores to determine the escape route and possible accomplices; and secondly, precisely identify omissions in the security controls of the facility, ranging from failures in surveillance patrols to vulnerabilities in the physical infrastructure.

This incident is framed in a broader context of challenges for the Mexico City prison system, where overcrowding, prison conditions and endemic corruption represent persistent obstacles to effective social reintegration and safe custody. The escape of an inmate accused of a serious crime not only generates social alarm, but also requires an in-depth evaluation of the supervision mechanisms and action protocols of prison staff. The effectiveness of the ongoing investigation will be essential not only to recapture the escapee, but also to implement structural correctives that strengthen the integrity of the system.

Sheinbaum: neither friendship nor charges are above the law

Sheinbaum defends that neither friendship nor charges are above the law

President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke about the preventive detention issued against the former director of Pemex, Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, accused of family aggression and vicarious violence. In his morning conference, he stated that “neither friendship nor charges are above the law.”

We all saw a video that the victim uploaded to social networks where it is evident that there is violence on the part of Víctor; In that case, as in all, that is very important: neither friendship nor positions are above the law. That has always been our position and that is how we will always act.

Sheinbaum added that it is up to the Morelos Prosecutor’s Office to determine the procedure. On Wednesday, Judge Adriana Carrera Ortiz imposed the precautionary measure after reviewing the elements of the investigation file, made up of the complaint of family and vicarious abuse against the wife and youngest daughter of the former official.

Details of the case and defense of the victims

The act of aggression was recorded in a video released by the victim herself, which occurred in a home in the Country Club subdivision, in Emiliano Zapata, Morelos. Sheinbaum reiterated: “We will always defend the victims.”

The president also referred to the resolution of the Michoacán Court that determined that Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña exercised gender-based political violence against Mayor Grecia Quiroz. The senator announced that he will appeal the ruling. Sheinbaum pointed out that “the corresponding authorities” must resolve it and stressed his commitment to the victims.

According to the ruling, Fernández Noroña demeaned the management of the mayor, who took office after the death of her husband, Carlos Manzo. Sheinbaum concluded: “Be with the victims and with justice, always.”

FGR identifies the pilot of the plane that took El Mayo to the US

Authorities know the identity of the pilot, but do not reveal it; is located in the United States.

The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) confirmed that it has already identified the pilot of the aircraft that took Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada to the United States on July 25, 2024. Prosecutor Ernestina Godoy assured that they have his identity, but they did not make it public.

“We have also identified the person who piloted it… navigation services in Mexican airspace provided the audio of the moment in which the pilot of the aircraft that transported Ismael ‘N’ requested the control tower of the Ciudad Juárez airport, Chihuahua, for transponder codes to enter the United States. In addition, through expert opinions on audio, the identification of the pilot was achieved,” Godoy explained.

The pilot is in US territory

David Boone, head of the Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office, explained that the pilot is currently in the United States. According to Boone, the US authorities deported him to Mexico, but here he was detained for crimes committed, including carrying a firearm, and later handed over to the US government.

A file was opened on the case, although it was not specified whether the pilot was interrogated by Mexican authorities before his surrender.

“The pilot was deported, he continued to operate committing crimes in Mexico; this is the information that appears. He was arrested for carrying a weapon and was handed over, based on the National Security Law, to the United States government. This is the situation that appears in the file regarding the pilot,” said Boone.

The FGR has not revealed the identity of the pilot or the charges he faces in the United States. The case remains under reserve.
