An Emergency Due to a Hydrocarbon Leak in Tlaxcala
The Government of the State of Tlaxcala, in coordination with federal authorities, police corporations and rescue teams, implemented a containment operation to control a significant gas leak in the Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) pipelines that run through parts of the municipality of Nanacamilpa, located in the eastern region of the entity. This incident, detected in the early hours of the morning on a Thursday, generated a dense cloud of hydrocarbons that was initially confused by the population with a morning fog bank, which underlines the danger and insidious nature of this type of industrial emergencies.
The environmental and security contingency forced the preventive evacuation of an estimated three thousand inhabitants from the surrounding communities of San Felipe Hidalgo and Tepuente, identified by risk protocols as the most vulnerable to a potential incident of greater proportions. According to the official reports collected, the emergency allegedly originated due to a clandestine intake, a criminal practice recurrently used for the illegal extraction of fuel from the national pipeline network. As an immediate consequence, a broad and complex inter-institutional operation was activated with the primary objective of mitigating the risk for the civilian population and the environment.
Action Protocols and Environmental Impact
Governor Lorena Cuéllar Cisneros reported, through her official communication channels, that the authorities of the three levels of government deployed a security device whose absolute priority was to safeguard the population. “Preventively, the evacuation of nearly 3,000 people from San Felipe Hidalgo and Tepuente was ordered, who are safe in the municipal auditorium,” said the state president. This massive and organized transfer demonstrates the application of civil protection protocols designed for this type of crisis scenarios.
According to the preliminary technical report, specialized personnel from Pemex, supported by elements of the National Guard, immediately moved to the site of the incident to carry out critical technical maneuvers. These tasks included the strategic closure of the sectioning valves of the affected gas pipelines, a delicate operation that was estimated to require at least three additional hours for its complete execution and the stabilization of the situation. The State Government, in close coordination with the City Hall of Nanacamilpa, kept the contingency under control, restricting access to the impacted area and enabling the municipal auditorium as a temporary shelter for evacuees.
A crucial aspect of the analysis of this event is its ecological impact. The affected area is part of the firefly sighting corridor, a natural phenomenon of high tourist and biological value whose main season runs between the months of May and August. Although no immediate material damage or injuries were reported due to exposure to the gas released into the atmosphere, the dispersion of fuel in the environment represents a stress factor and a proven negative impact for the local ecosystem, affecting both the fauna and the wild flora of the forested region. It should be noted that this is not an isolated incident; Just in the previous July, a gas leak of similar dimensions was recorded in the area known as “Los Colgados”, also located within the ejido of the town of Tepuente, which suggests a pattern of recurring criminal activity in the energy infrastructure of the area.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge citizens to stay informed exclusively through official communication channels, avoiding approaching the risk perimeter that remains cordoned off. This event highlights the persistent challenges in energy security and the fight against huachicoleo, illicit activities that not only represent an economic loss for the nation, but also carry a serious risk for communities and the environment.
