Basque has a medical puzzle before the World Cup
The final assembly of the Mexican National Team for the 2026 World Cup is complicated for Javier Aguirre. He admitted it after the defeat of Iceland, and the outlook does not look easy.
Injury losses are a logistical nightmare. Edson Álvarez, Luis Romo, Santi Giménez and Luis Chávez are some names on the list of concerns. His status is a mystery months before the tournament.
“That’s right, I have to go to Europe this week, I’m going to see how everyone is,” Aguirre confessed in Querétaro.
The technician is in extreme surveillance mode. He knows that time is ticking and the recovery of his starters is not something he can force. Every day counts.
“Not fighting, but we are discussing the rehabilitation process with their clubs,” he added about the negotiations to have his players at one hundred.
Romo’s situation is especially delicate – a break that would keep him out for six to eight weeks. For such a long process, every week lost now hurts twice as much later.
Plan B is on the table. Aguirre mentioned that there are people who helped in the past whose return is uncertain. This opens the door to surprises in the final call.
Meanwhile, Vasco has a clear path: visit Europe, personally evaluate his injured players and cross his fingers. Preparation for 2026 goes first through the recovery room.
