The Earth woke up in a bad mood
It seems that our beloved planet decided to start the day with a bang. The Japan meteorological agency, always attentive to the vagaries of the Earth’s crust, reported that a magnitude 8.0 earthquake shook the Kamchatka peninsula, in Russia. And of course, as if that were not enough, he also issued a tsunami warning for Japan, because what would be a good scare without some threatening water?
The tremor occurred at 8:25 a.m. local time, because nature, although chaotic, is punctual. Japanese authorities warned of waves of up to 1 meter on the Pacific coast, enough to get your feet wet or, if you’re unlucky, your living room sofa.
Damage? For now, only scares and lost shoes
Fortunately, no serious damage was reported… at least not in Japan. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the city closest to the epicenter, residents ran into the street without shoes or coats, because nothing motivates an improvised run more than panic. According to the Russian agency Tass, some closets collapsed, mirrors broke (goodbye, seven years of bad luck) and the balconies danced as if they were at a clandestine party.
To make matters worse, there were power outages and mobile phone failures, because what would a natural disaster be without losing signal just when you need it most?
USA He also signs up for drama
The United States could not be missing in this role. The National Tsunami Warning Center issued warnings for the Aleutian Islands of Alaska and parts of the West Coast, including California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii. Just in case, it’s better not to plan a day at the beach today.
Meanwhile, Japan, an expert in earthquakes and tsunamis, already had its working group ready to act. A seismologist at the University of Tokyo, Shinichi Sakai, explained to NHK that a distant earthquake can cause a tsunami if the epicenter is shallow. Come on, the Earth not only trembles, but also warns with waves.
In case anyone had forgotten, a few days ago there were already five earthquakes near Kamchatka, the largest of magnitude 7.4. It seems that the region is on a roll… and not a good one.
