Your phone disappeared, but technology does not abandon you
Losing your cell phone makes your stomach turn. We know it. It’s that moment of panic where you check your pockets for the fifth time. But if you have an Android, there is hope even in the worst case scenario.
According to data from The Competitive Intelligence Unit, more than two million devices were lost or stolen in 2024 alone. A figure that makes you think.
The settings you can’t skip
The key is to activate the features before the problem occurs. Google has integrated powerful tools, but they are disabled by default. You need to give them the green light.
Go to Settings > Google > ‘All services’. Find ‘Locator’ and turn on ‘Allow device to be located’. It’s not optional if you value your information.
The next step is crucial: activate ‘Remote Lock’. This allows you to lock the screen remotely if someone else has it. Then, go to ‘Find offline devices’ and select ‘No network’.
With this, your phone can be located by other nearby Android devices, creating a search network even if yours is turned off or without data.
The moment of truth: how to track it
If the worst is over, breathe. Open any browser and go to google.com/android/find. Sign in with the account linked to your lost device.
You’ll see a map with the approximate location, battery level, and the network it’s connected to (if any). From here you have full control:
- Play sound: Ideal if you think it is nearby, in an armchair or under some sheets.
- Mark as lost: Blocks remote access and displays a personalized message on the screen.
- Remote wipe: The nuclear option. Factory reset the device if you know there is no going back.
This suite of tools turns a moment of desperation into a controlled procedure. It’s not magic, it’s planning.
Our phones are windows to our digital lives. Setting these options takes five minutes today, but can save you months of headache tomorrow. It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
