Yalitza Aparicio goes all out in her new project
The Oaxacan actress does not choose just any role. After Roma and his Oscar nomination, he is looking for projects with purpose. And this is a big one: the miniseries “Peace peace now now”, which premieres this March 8 on Lifetime.
“Choosing a university meant leaving my community, and that is money that many do not have on hand. I would tell the girls that there are no limits,” says Yalitza.
Each episode occurs in a different country: Chile, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico. It was her turn to immerse herself in the history of the Grandmothers of Sepur Zarco, indigenous Guatemalan women who survived the armed conflict.
Meeting the 14 survivors was, in his words, revealing. Not because of pain, but because of strength.
“It was thinking about my grandmothers… Having them in front of me was shocking; more than feeling sorry, it was seeing these warriors with their heads held high,” he points out.
There is the key. They are not victims, they are fighters seeking justice after decades. Yalitza left her career as a rural teacher behind to dedicate herself to this: telling stories that matter.
The premiere coincides with International Women’s Day. Chance? I highly doubt it.
