Ximena Sariñana, that multifaceted artist who conquered us with pop ballads and soap opera soundtracks, has just released an EP that would make any fan of distorted riffs cry with emotion. “Rompe”, their new musical gem, is as if Alanis Morissette and Julieta Venegas had a baby raised in a punk garage in CDMX. And the best? Ximena herself describes it as “the most guitar project” of her career. Finally someone who keeps his teenage promises!
Tours, chaos and mysterious blondes
Between hipster cafes and underground forums, the singer confessed that these four songs (“Nada”, “Rompe”, “Chispa rojo” and “Party in my room”) had been simmering for two years. Now he presents them on a US tour that includes stops in cities like Los Angeles and New York, because of course, what better place for a rock debut than the country of hot dogs and Fender guitars?
The video for “Chispa rojo”—a visual delirium with choreography between blondes in the style of Mulholland Drive— is, according to her, a metaphor for “the emotional chaos of reinventing yourself”. Basically, what we all feel trying to do yoga at 6 AM after a party.
Philosophy of life: all or nothing (literally)
The phrase “Let everything be all or nothing” not only gives the EP its title, but also summarizes its existential mantra. “With age you want to lower your intensity, but you also lower your feeling”, reflects this mother of two who, at 39 years old, shows that rock has no expiration date. Take that, a society that believes that after 30 you can only listen to jazz or self-help podcasts.
And speaking of breaking stereotypes, Sariñana was also part of the team behind the Hera Festival, an exclusive space for female artists. Because yes, patriarchy is also fought with amplifiers at full volume.
The serious side: tragedies and reflections
The conversation took a turn when mentioning the tragedy at the Ceremonia Festival, where two photojournalists lost their lives. “There was negligence,” he stated crudely, underscoring the need for solidarity in the industry. A reminder that, behind the scenes, there are stories that do not always have a happy ending.
