Victory for Van der Poel in the ninth stage
Mathieu van der Poel timed his attack perfectly to win the mountainous ninth stage of the Tour de France in a sprint. The Dutchman beat the Norwegian Tobias Johannessen and the British Tom Pidcock, recording the same time: 3h 27min 51s.
“It was a really tough stage after a tough week for the team,” declared the Alpecin-Premier Tech rider.
Extreme heat marked the day. The 154.6 km route between Malemort and Ussel was shortened by about 30 km due to the red weather alert in the local department.
Van der Poel, 31, thus adds his third stage victory in the Tour. His maternal grandfather was Raymond Poulidor, the historic French cyclist who died in 2019. “I always think of him, every day in the Tour is special,” he said.
Tadej Pogacar, four-time champion, finished six seconds behind and retained the yellow jersey. He maintains a 2:42 advantage over Jonas Vingegaard, second. His Mexican teammate Isaac del Toro occupies third place at 3:27.
The stage, with an undulating profile, favored the off-roaders or “baroudeurs”. A group of eight escaped with 80 km to go, including Van der Poel, Pidcock and Filippo Ganna. At 25 km, Van der Poel attacked and only four remained. His power prevailed in the sprint.
