Historical victory in the most demanding classic
The Dutch champion Mathieu van der Poel consolidated his legend by winning the Paris-Roubaix for the third consecutive year, in an edition marked by the misfortune of his greatest rival, Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian, debutant in this event, saw his aspirations cut short after a mistake on the dreaded cobblestones 38 km from the finish line.
The definitive twist
Known as “The Hell of the North”, the 259.2 km race requires technical and mental endurance. Pogacar, leader of the Tour de France, lost critical ground when he swerved in a corner and suffered a subsequent puncture. Van der Poel, although he also faced mechanical problems (change of bicycle with 16 km to go), remained calm and crossed the Roubaix velodrome in 5h31’27”, dedicating his victory with an emotional three-finger gesture.
“This victory has a special flavor due to the toughness of the course and the level of Pogacar,” declared the winner, reinforcing his dominance in the monumental classics, where he equals the Slovenian with eight titles each.
In the women’s category, Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt overcame physical adversity to win solo, demonstrating the growing competitiveness of women’s cycling in extreme events.
