Tension amid a fragile ceasefire

Venezuela asks UNDP for help to rebuild homes

Venezuela requests support from the UN to rebuild homes after the June earthquakes.

The interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, asked this Sunday from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for support to promote housing programs and care for those affected by the earthquakes of June 24. The request focuses on La Guaira, 30 kilometers north of Caracas and the hardest hit area.

Management before international organizations

Rodríguez met with Alexander De Croo, UNDP administrator, and thanked him for his willingness to accompany the recovery. The goal is to assess damage, rebuild homes, and support educational and employment programs in affected communities.

The earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 left thousands dead and injured, damaged hundreds of buildings and left tens of thousands homeless, mainly in the state of La Guaira.

At the same time, the Executive announced the opening of an account in the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) with an initial fund of 200 million dollars of Venezuelan resources, destined for the construction of housing and subject to international audit. A fund in bolivars was also created in the Economic and Social Development Bank (Bandes) to finance the manufacture of houses.

The government is in talks with the United States, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank to obtain resources and non-reimbursable cooperation.

Hamas ushers in new administration in Gaza

The Hamas government sent a signal to relax its control in the Gaza Strip. Ismail al-Thawabta, director of the press office, announced the dissolution of the local Emergency Committee. The measure seeks to facilitate the transition to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, a body provided for in the international plan.

The new entity will be under the supervision of the Peace Council. The job continuity of fifty thousand public employees is guaranteed.

Ali Shaath, president of the transition committee, assured that they are prepared to take control under a single law. However, the Islamist militia’s Ministry of the Interior will continue to manage security.

The Israeli government disqualified the initiative. He accused the organization of trying to replicate a model where they retain control of the armed forces.

Despite skepticism, the US administration is moving forward with the project through logistical and military support. A new round of negotiations will take place in Cairo in the coming days.
