The curtain opens with a hug
On Wednesday morning, in Hermosillo, the cold air witnessed something that seemed impossible. Yesenia Colón saw her daughter Wendy again after almost four years. The young woman, originally from Chilpancingo, Guerrero, had been reported missing since November.
His story is that of thousands. He traveled north in hopes of a job in the agricultural fields and a better future. But the script they sold him was a lie.
The network that never gives up
The reunion was no coincidence. It was the result of Tuesday, March 10, when the collective Searching Mothers of Sonora, led by Ceci Patricia Flores, carried out a live search. They worked with distributed files and coordinated with the State Prosecutor’s Office.
“After three long years of uncertainty, pain and hope, today we share news that fills our hearts,” said Ceci Flores.
Wendy was found alive in the Cereso de Hermosillo. His mother traveled from Guerrero when she received the news. Through tears, Yesenia thanked: “Thank you all. Without your support this would not have been possible.”
But this happy ending is just one act in a much larger national tragedy.
The bait of false promises
Ceci Flores says it bluntly: the recruitment or “enganche” system in the south operates with false narratives. “The sky and the stars are bringing them down,” he warns.
They promise equipped apartments, good salaries and benefits. The reality is different:
- Bedrooms on the floor.
- Retention of documents.
- Total disconnection that erases identities.
“Many end up homeless or addicted due to lack of communication and the theft of their documents,” revealed Flores.
Wendy was lucky. It was found. Her daughter, now 11, gets her mother back. But the work continues for the Seeking Mothers.
“As long as one is missing, the search does not end,” Flores said.
With a humor that is only born from deep pain, he joked about Wendy: “She’s already scolded… because it can’t be that they lose numbers and don’t communicate.”
Wendy and Yesenia have already started their journey home. They leave with a promise: not to fall for deception again. They leave with the peace of knowing that the table will no longer have an empty chair.
Meanwhile, in Hermosillo, the Searching Mothers prepare shovels and telephones. They wait for the next call. Because as long as there is a family waiting, the theater of pain cannot lower its curtain.
