The White House has generated uncertainty among lawyers, companies and applicants after announcing a change in the permanent residency process in the United States.
The Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the new policy: those seeking a green card and who are in the United States with temporary status must leave the country to begin the process. Until now, it was possible to complete the process within the US under certain conditions.
Exceptions not yet defined
The official memo does not clearly detail the exceptions. Immigration lawyers warn that the ambiguous wording has led to different interpretations. Some specialists point out that the measure could delay or complicate processes for hundreds of thousands of applicants each year.
Uncertainty grows as the government does not clarify to whom the change actually applies or under what circumstances exceptions could be granted.
