The day a railway ride became an unauthorized fireworks show
PACHUCA, Hgo.- In a demonstration that punctuality is not the only thing that can derail, a train in the municipality of Tepetitlán decided that its route was too boring and opted for a dramatic detour, followed by an explosion for added emphasis. The result: a person with more marks than a treasure map and another who, understandably, seems to have vanished without a trace. The locomotive, in a display of eclecticism in its cargo, transported ethyl alcohol (ideal for disinfecting wounds or, apparently, to fuel fireworks) and hexane, a compound so charming that emergency teams needed special suits.
The state authorities, with the serenity that characterizes them, reported that the incident, which occurred in the fourth block of the Central area of Tepetitlán, left large material losses. Because, of course, when a train explodes, the least important thing is the budget. A brave member of private security from the railway company had the misfortune of starring in the event too closely, leaving with a combo of first and second degree burns and a touch of smoke poisoning, because why choose if you can have it all? The injured person was properly treated and taken to a hospital, where they will surely explain to him that trains should be looked at, not touched. Meanwhile, his partner decided to play hide and seek at a professional level, with the most plausible hypothesis that he was trapped between the burned carriages, a hiding place certainly not recommended.
Rescue operation: When toxic smoke becomes the main guest
In response to this disaster, an impressive operation was deployed with elements of state Civil Protection, municipal Public Security and technical personnel from the railway company. Their search, tracking and structural verification tasks were enhanced by the need to use specialized respiratory and thermal protection equipment, all thanks to the generous presence of toxic vapors and temperatures worthy of a pizza oven. The authorities, in an attempt to calm things down, reported that the situation is controlled and that there is no risk to the population. This, of course, after some carriages exploded creating dense columns of smoke visible for miles, because nothing screams “everything is under control” like a black cloud on the horizon.
The machine was so severely damaged that the protocol for emergencies with hazardous materials was immediately activated. A security perimeter of 300 meters was established, a safe distance to observe the disaster without a piece of wagon falling on your head. Actions focused on containment, cooling and isolating the area, basically trying to convince the fire to go out.
The official rhetoric: From “it is controlled” to “permanent supervision”
In a display of technique, pressurized water and chemical foam were applied to control the flames and cool the metal structures, thus preventing their pleasant reactivation. An atmospheric monitoring was also carried out which, to everyone’s relief, ruled out the presence of flammable or toxic gases for the population. Because, fortunately, the smoke you breathe after a hexane-alcohol explosion is perfectly harmless and pleasantly scented. The authorities insisted that the incident is completely controlled and without risk to the public. The area remains under permanent protection and supervision, with controlled removal of wagons and structural evaluation, which in colloquial language means “it’s going to take a while to clean up this mess.”
To crown the management, the state Undersecretary of Civil Protection indicated that it maintains close coordination with the railway authorities to continue with the investigations and guarantee the comprehensive security of the area. Or, in other words, to try to figure out how a quiet trip through Hidalgo ended up becoming the set of a low-budget disaster movie.
