The dark side of “rehabilitation centers”
Guadalajara, Jalisco – Because nothing says “therapy” like being locked up against your will by people who believe that a hit cures addiction. Eleven missing people appeared in annexes (those places where organized crime plays Dr. Phil) in Chapala, Zapotlanejo and other municipalities. Spoiler: their families had no idea.
Organized crime: the worst therapist in history
In a twist that no one saw coming (a lie, we all saw it), in at least one case, it was members of organized crime who “registered” the victim. The Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office, between operations, has reviewed 65 of these centers, where ethics are conspicuous by their absence. And yes, they have also arrested 11 individuals with more red flags than a football game: from robbery to sexual abuse.
But not everything is tragedy: 225 people have been freed from these sites and returned to their families. Because, surprise, it turns out that locking someone up without their consent is… illegal.
And now what? The Prosecutor’s Office not only rescues, it also informs victims about their rights and how to report. Because, let’s be honest, if your “therapist” has a history of human trafficking, he may not be the best spiritual guide.
