Mayor of Cuitzeo survives armed attack in Michoacán
Rosa Elia Milan Pintor, municipal president of Cuitzeo, Michoacán, suffered an attack early this Saturday in a gastronomic establishment in the town. The attack left the official and two of her bodyguards injured, as confirmed by state authorities.
Attack details
The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. at the La Cabaña del Lago restaurant, located in the El Embarcadero neighborhood, during a private meeting. Witnesses alerted the emergency services, mobilizing medical bodies and security forces to the place located on the road to San Agustín del Pulque.
The Attorney General’s Office of Michoacán began an investigation to clarify the facts. “The injured received primary care on site before being transferred to a hospital in Morelia,” an official statement detailed. Milan Pintor has minor injuries and is progressing favorably, while one of his guards remains in critical condition.
History of violence
This is not the first violent episode linked to the mayor. In June 2021, her husband, José Pérez Aguilar, was murdered in an attack directed against her when she was a candidate for the PT-Morena. Later, in 2022, the then trustee Francisco Díaz Rodríguez was kidnapped and executed. Last June, the candidate for trustee Israel Delgado Vega was also killed.
Analysts point out that these events reflect the climate of insecurity that public officials face in areas with the presence of criminal groups. Cuitzeo, located in a strategic region for drug trafficking, registers high rates of violence linked to territorial disputes.
Security experts emphasize the urgency of specialized protocols to protect local authorities. “These attacks seek to destabilize municipal governments and co-opt institutions,” warned a recent report from the Michoacán Citizen Observatory.
The case has reopened the debate on the use of armored escorts and protection schemes for councilors in risk areas. Official data indicate that, in 2024 alone, six Mexican mayors have suffered attacks, three of them fatal.
