Extension of deadline in investigation for qualified homicide
The case against Carlota and her two children, Eduardo and Mariana, will continue for at least five more months while a complementary investigation is carried out for the crimes of qualified double homicide and attempted homicide. Judge Karen Guadarrama authorized the extension of the deadline at the request of the new defense lawyer, Karim Peralta, who argued the need to carry out multiple expert opinions and interviews to build a solid legal strategy.
Changes in the defense and new acts of investigation
During the initial hearing, it was confirmed that the defendants changed their legal team and now have a single defender, Karim Peralta, while Arturo Santana, former deputy and Carlota’s son, will continue as his mother’s legal assistant. In addition, a public advisor was incorporated to represent the victims, who, according to the advisor, receive protection and psychological support.
Peralta explained that during this period expert reports will be carried out in key areas such as legal medicine, forensic psychiatry and social anthropology, along with interviews with witnesses and a notarial attestation of facts about the property in dispute. He also requested access to the clinical records of the fatal victims and pointed out irregularities in the investigation folder, where 70 of the 290 pages are illegible, which required review by the Public Ministry.
Complaints and legal strategies
Eduardo, one of the accused, reported restrictions on visiting his mother and sister in the Chalco prison. The judge agreed to send a letter to the director of the penitentiary center to resolve this situation. At the conclusion of the hearing, Santana and Peralta mentioned that they are evaluating requesting a change in precautionary measures for Carlota, although they have not yet defined the date. Santana emphasized: “It is a strategy that requires precision to avoid denial.”.
The case, which has attracted media attention due to the serious charges and the profile of the accused, could extend even further depending on the findings of the expert reports. The authorities are keeping the three in preventive detention while the investigation continues.
