Unprecedented rescue operation
A specialized team from TMC Maritime completed this Saturday the complex recovery of the Bayesian superyacht, sunk 50 meters deep off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, since August 2024. The vessel, 56 meters long and valued in tens of millions, partially emerged during the early hours, showing its distinctive blue hull and white superstructure, before to be stabilized on a floating platform.
Innovative techniques in maritime rescue
As detailed by David Wilson, TMC Maritime spokesperson, the process required:
- Eight steel straps to maintain the stability of the helmet
- Continuous pumping of water for 72 hours
- Previous removal of the 72 meter mast
The Italian Coast Guard supervised the operations, which included technical tests to assess structural integrity before final transfer to the port of Termini Imerese.
Context of the tragedy
The shipwreck occurred during a storm with winds of 70 knots (130 km/h), which tilted the yacht 90 degrees in less than 15 seconds. Among the victims was Mike Lynch, a technology magnate recently acquitted of fraud charges in the US, his daughter and five guests. A preliminary British report indicates that the crew had sought shelter in the area precisely to avoid predicted thunderstorms.
Investigation in progress
The Italian authorities will examine:
- Possible failures in the stabilization systems
- Emergency protocols applied
- Actual versus predicted weather conditions
The yacht will remain in custody in Sicily while criminal and technical investigations continue, which could establish new safety standards for deep-draft vessels.
