Thalía, the queen of “Mexican love”, but not of activism
Ah, Thalia. The same one that made us dance with “Amor a la Mexicana” and cry with “Arrasando” (literally, because what a dramatic song). But when it comes to thorny issues such as the raids on migrants in the US, the diva preferred to apply the tactic of “hear, see and shut up”… even though the reporter insisted more than a fan on a meet & greet.
The awkward moment we all saw coming
Imagine the scene: Thalía, just coming out of promoting her new single “Tu amor” (because yes, she still makes music), surrounded by media and fans. Everything was going well until a journalist dropped the bomb: “What do you say to the Mexicans who suffer from the raids?”. The singer, with the elegance of someone avoiding a meme on Twitter, looked away as if she had just seen a spoiler for her own soap opera.
And no, it wasn’t a “I’ll think about it and get back to you later”. It was a silence more eloquent than a monologue by Luis Miguel in an interview. Meanwhile, his fans received smiles, photos and even blessings (we suppose), because there is time for that. But talk about Mexican migrants in the US? Nah, that doesn’t sell records.
The networks do not forgive (never)
Obviously, Twitter and Facebook exploded as if Thalía had announced a remake of “Marimar” (God forbid). The comments ranged from “he cares more about his gringo status” to “if you’re not there in the bad times, there’s nothing left in the good times” (ouch, that one hurt more than a soap opera ending). Some even remembered that he only supports Latin causes when it suits him, like those influencers who upload “solidarity” photos during awards season.
How ironic? That his most famous song talks about “Mexican love”, but apparently, that love does not include speaking out when your countrymen are having a worse time than a character from “La Rosa de Guadalupe”. Of course, if it comes to smiling for the cameras, she is a champion there.
Moral? In the world of celebrities, silence sometimes screams louder than loud reggaeton. And Thalía, whether we like it or not, has just given the most commented “no comment” concert of the week.
